Stockhausen: Trans image

Oliver Knussen conducts an all-Stockhausen programme culminating with Trans (1971); a magnificent and fascinating orchestral work which came to the composer in a dream. This theatrical piece is played entirely behind a mesh gauze, so that the eerie sounds seem to appear and fade away as if in a dream themselves. Karlheinz Stockhausen shared an important working relationship with the London Sinfonietta – as has Oliver Knussen who returns not only to conduct tonight’s concert, but represents his role as the Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
