In 2017, London Sinfonietta performed in the newly renovated building of Southbank Centre's Hayward Gallery alongside a special retrospective of photographer Andreas Gursky, with music by producer, writer and pioneering electronic musician Matthew Herbert.
His latest London Sinfonietta commission more, more, more responded to Gursky’s Untitled XIII (2002), a fascinating and un-nerving photograph of a landfill site in Chimalhuacán, Mexico City. A comment on endless consumerism, more, more, more was made from the contents of rubbish bins on the South Bank, and is a piece for two musicians and electronics. This first in a series of gallery lates offered a unique experience of Gursky’s work, as the music captured the rhythm, colour and complexity of his photographs.
Duration: 30-40 mins, varied length
Orchestration: trumpet, percussion (rubbish bin) and electronics (unconducted)
World Premiere: 14.03.2018 Hayward Gallery, by London Sinfonietta and Matthew Herbert
