Untold Stories Southampton: Alys Scott-Hawkins, Anil Sood and Benjamin Oliver

London Sinfonietta’s Untold Stories is a series of portrait pieces celebrating the importance of connecting with those around us. We commission local composers and filmmakers to make a collaborative piece that focuses on the story of a member of the public who is a central part of their community. The digital project is released and celebrated through an in-person event curated with local organisations and people, involving London Sinfonietta musicians.

Untold Stories: Edmonton

Do you want to get involved in composing a brand new piece of music? We are looking for residents of Edmonton to join us in exploring memories and experiences of the area, which will be combined into one of our Untold Stories films.

Over the course of four workshops, you’ll work with professional artists who have links to Edmonton - workshop leader Raphael Clarkson, filmmaker Nigel Kellaway and composer Ryan Morgan - to collect stories and co-create new music which celebrates the local area. This material will then be made into a brand new piece of music and film which will be premiered at events in April and May 2024.

Taking part is free and you don’t need any previous musical experience!

Untold Stories: Anil Snood

The first of our Untold Stories film, ANIL SOOD by Alys Scott-Hawkins (accompanied by Benjamin Oliver's score A-Listers), tells the story of Southampton local Anil Sood. Anil is well-known in Southampton for running a dance music record shop and drum'n'bass events in the 1990s and 2000s. Through an interview Anil tells the stories of highs and lows; most recently having to close his latest business during the pandemic. The film brings together Benjamin's piece A-Listers (featuring Clíodna Shanahan on piano), archive material, interview footage and animation to interpret Anil's story.

The film premiered at The Stage Door in Southampton. Clíodna Shanahan and Huw Davies played music by Julia Wolfe, Benjamin Oliver and Steve Reich, and Anil finished the evening with a DJ set.

Untold Stories: Avi Tordjman

Derek Nisbet’s new work ‘A Piece of the Puzzle’ is inspired by Avi Tordjman and charts his story in acquiring Coventry Synagogue. Empty since the 90s, Avi acquired the Synagogue 8 years ago and has since then been slowly renovating it for the local community and the city of Coventry. He talks Derek through his motivation and ambitions for the project in this unique composition and film which makes use of interviews, images and traditional Jewish instrumentation.

The film premiered at Warwick Arts Weekender in October 2022. Derek Nisbet's piece was performed by London Sinfonietta players as part of a weekend full of ground-breaking international performances, creative workshops, music, and more.
