Surf and Turf

A celebration of words and music in Suffolk

Local perception of the changing landscape and traditions, folk stories, local tales and distinctive landmarks has been the inspiration for this creative project over summer 2009 and summer 2010 in four local areas in Suffolk: Suffolk Coastal; Babergh; Forest Heath; Mid-Suffolk.

Led by music workshop leader Fraser Trainer and poet leader Dean Parkin, community and school groups from the four local areas are working with London Sinfonietta musicians.

This season, groups from Stowmarket and Newmarket will be creating brand new work which will be performed in key local venues.

To see more about the exciting projects which took place in Shotley and Felixstowe in Summer 2009, visit the Surf and Turf website. You will find photos, video clips, blog entries and more!

Sunday 30 May 2010
Museum of East Anglian Life, Stowmarket

London Sinfonietta musicians and a group of young people drawn from a cluster of local Stowmarket Primary Schools will showcase brand new music. The groups will work together in a 4-day project to create the new work which will be performed as part of the Stowmarket Festival. Alongside the new music, will be performances of existing repertoire by the London Sinfonietta.

August 2010
Newmarket

Later on in the summer term, the ensemble will be working in Newmarket in a unique cross-arts project with 'lads' and 'lasses' from the horse-racing centre Newmarket. Thousands of young men and women come to Newmarket from all over the British Isles for the racing season to be part of the buzz that takes over this town, and get involved in the vibrant racing scene. This project will give this community a chance to share a glimpse of their unique lifestyles, by creating new music and artwork that reflects the world they live and work in.

This project will be documented from start to finish. You will find a growing library of journal entries by text, photo, poetry, sound clips, video and more on the project website. The link to this website is below.

Surf and Turf is an exciting collaboration, initiated and co-produced by Orchestras Live, the national development agency for professional orchestral music, working with the London Sinfonietta and four local areas of Suffolk - Babergh, Suffolk Coastal, Forest Heath and Mid Suffolk.

Newmarket Cross Arts Project

I'm heading back to Newmarket from France in a couple of weeks. Will the project still be running? I'm crossing the continent with a backpack, a rubbish map and my trusty white flip flops... which are now rather black! Hope to catch you before you leave.

surf and turf

Does surf and turf have anywhere near the same meaning there as it does here in Aus? Here it means a big platter of steak and sea food :)

Cheers,

Any plans to do this again in 2011. I'm hoping my Campervan Hire Australia business gives me time to get there? Jen.
