"Of all my works this is perhaps the most ambiguous," says Joanna, "inasmuch as the gap between its compositional intentions and receptions as a piece of music has proven to be very wide indeed. It has been misinterpreted as romantic and atmospheric when in fact it is grounded in the idea of sonic investigation and music as process."

This world premiere performance of the new version for string quartet (the original was written for the Apartment House ensemble) was recorded by BBC Radio on 13 May 2006 at Jerwood Hall, LSO St Luke's.
