Wolfgang Rihm Bild (eine Chiffre)
Wolfgang Rihm Concerto 'Séraphin' (UK premiere)
Wolfgang Rihm’s music is powerfully independent, strikingly original and continually experimental – and Concerto ‘Séraphin’ is no exception. Composed in 2006 for 16 players, it’s an expressive musical maelstrom, full of wild instrumentation and rich, emotional soundscapes. Bild (ein Chiffre) is a short, dark-hued work from Rihm’s Cipher series. Originally written in the 1980s, the composer suggests it might preface or follow – rather than accompany – the silent film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, ‘Un chien andalou’.
Wolfgang Rihm is one of today’s most prolific composers; his work encompasses every form imaginable, incorporating boundless combinations of instruments, size, style and expression.
The London Sinfonietta has a long association with Rihm’s music and has given several performances of his music in the past. This concert is part of an extensive event produced by the BBC Symphony Orchestra celebrating the composer’s music through concerts, films & discussions.
Opportunity for composers: As part of the wider Wolfgang Rihm celebration by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Kingston University are offering budding composers the opportunity to submit works for workshop rehearsal with the Arditti Quartet at Kingston University in March 2010.
Some of the works will then be performed at a concert on Friday 12 March at the Jerwood Hall, LSO St Luke's as part of the Total Immersion: Wolfgang Rihm series.
