Steve Reich Music for 18 Musicians

Minimalist composer Steve Reich and Synergy Vocals join the London Sinfonietta for the iconic, hour-long Music for 18 Musicians, a spellbinding blend of voices and instruments, filled with recurring phrases and gently shimmering harmonies. Reich leads this performance of his own music, taking part in the opening work Clapping Music – a piece for two performers who create complex rhythms out of one regularly shifting pattern. The innovative Bang on a Can ensemble, visiting from New York, perform Electric Counterpoint and Sextet. Electric Counterpoint weaves together several lilting guitar layers in three successive movements, creating an intoxicating mix of pulsing harmonics, hypnotic rhythms and Central African-influenced melodies.

Sextet for four percussionists and two keyboards is exhilarating. Marimbas, bowed vibraphones, bass drums, sticks, tam-tams, pianos and synthesizers combine in this energetic piece.

Take Note: Post-concert talk- Steve Reich discusses his music.
