Marco Stroppa From Needle’s Eye (UK premiere)
A concert of music which explores the movement of sound in space, featuring three composers connected with IRCAM, the Parisian centre of avant-garde music and research.
Originally written for London Sinfonietta, Boulez's ...explosante-fixe... is an almost impressionist combination of flexible forms and decorative, static fields of pitches, like building stones seen in changing light.
This Festival’s featured composer, Marco Stroppa, also creates new spatial and acoustic entities, but here it is through the combination of ‘real’ and electronically extended sounds. Almost a trombone concerto exploring the instrument’s acoustic
properties through technology, From Needle’s Eye creates a musical ‘stream that’s roaring by / Came out of a needle’s eye’ (Yeats).
At the heart of the evening is a new work by composer and former musical director of Ensemble Intercontemporain, Peter Eötvös. Based on texts from the 18th-century German dramatist Schiller, the work features Eötvös as theatre composer. Celebrated for his Glyndebourne premiered Love and Other Demons Eötvös is at his best in a spatially organised performance that promises superb vocal delivery and a spell-binding musical experience.
