To celebrate the ensemble's 40th anniversary at the frontline of new music, young composers have been invited to create short works; each reflects a fascination with how new work is created and presented, and how the audience interacts with it. The concert is framed by two masterpieces that have become calling cards for the group; Harrison Birtwistle's virtuosic, unconducted 'ceremony' and John Adams' cartoon-inspired Chamber Symphony.
