Having trained as a photographer between 1972-74, Åke Parmerud studied music at the University and later at the Conservatory of Music in Göteborg, Sweden. His list of works includes instrumental music as well as electroacoustic compositions, multi-media and interactive art, video and music for theatre, dance and film. His music has been released on 2 LPs and 2 CDs and also appears on several compilations.
On two occasions he has received a Grammy award for best classical album of the year and in 1997 his work Grains of Voices was performed at the UN headquarters, New York, as part of United Nations Day. Music by Parmerud has represented Swedish Radio in Prix Italia at two occasions and he has composed a number of works commissioned by international institutions in Canada, Holland, France, Germany, Norway and Denmark.
Åke Parmerud also works as stage performer, making live electroacoustic music with different kinds of interactive instruments, both solo and as part of an ensemble. During the late 1980s and 1990s he worked extensively with composer Anders Blomqvist. Their live performances, sometimes including fireworks, toured several countries in Europe. He has also performed in Mexico and Canada and his works have been presented worldwide. He has been a member of The Swedish Royal Academy of Music since 1998.
He has worked as a sound and software designer for innovative interactive audio-visual installations and his own works The Fire Inside , The Living Room and Lost Angel have been shown in Berlin, Paris, Mexico City, Leon, Gothenburg and Reykavik. Parmerud has also created various concert designs and acted as artistic director of large audio-visual events indoors as well as outdoors. His success as an artist has led to several international collaborations.
Between 1999 and 2006 he worked with the Danish art team Boxiganga, developing new interactive video installations and exploring telematic concepts and interactive solutions for stage performance. Between 2000 and 2002 he also worked with Canadian choreographer Pierre-Paul Savoi as a composer, sound and software designer. His most recent stagework “The Seventh Sense” was developed together with Canadian choreographer Mireille Leblanc who also arranged choreography for the interactive sound/video-installation Lost Angel.
Together with Olle Niklasson he has started AudioTechture, a company specializing in acoustic interior design of different spaces ranging from private homes to public spaces.
